Before you begin
Unbox your Trézor and verify packaging. Only use the official box and accessories. Never enter your recovery seed into a computer or phone — write it down on the included card and store it securely.
Important security reminders:
- Only download software from the official source and verify signatures if provided.
- Never share your 24-word recovery seed with anyone. No legitimate support will ask for it.
- Inspect the device for tampering before first use. If anything looks unusual, contact support before proceeding.
What's in the box
- Trézor device (model may vary)
- USB cable
- Recovery seed cards
- Quick start leaflet
Step-by-step setup
- Charge / connect the device: Connect the Trézor to your computer using the included USB cable. Some models power on when connected.
- Go to the setup site: Open your browser and navigate to the official setup page (type the URL manually into your address bar). Look for the page that guides you to install the companion app or bridge tool.
- Install companion app: If required, download and install the official companion (desktop app or browser bridge). Only use the official download provided by the device manufacturer — verify domain and certificate.
- Initialize device: On the device screen, choose Create new (or Recover if you already have a seed). Follow on-device prompts to create a PIN. Use a PIN you can remember but isn’t guessable.
- Write down your recovery seed: The device will display your recovery words one by one. Write them down in order exactly as shown on the provided seed card. Do not take photos or copy into a digital file.
- Confirm seed on device: The device will ask you to confirm some words to ensure you recorded them correctly. Complete the confirmation to finish setup.
- Install apps / add accounts: Use the official desktop/mobile companion to install coin-specific apps and add cryptocurrency accounts to your Trézor. Each account may take a minute to initialize.
- Make a test transaction: Before moving large balances, send a small amount to/from your Trézor to verify everything is working and you understand the signing flow.
Troubleshooting
- Device not recognized: Try a different USB cable/port. Restart your computer and the companion app. Avoid USB hubs for first-time setup.
- Missing firmware: If the device asks to update firmware, follow on-screen instructions — only install firmware provided through the official companion app.
- Seed lost: If you lose your recovery seed and still have access to the device, create a new wallet immediately and transfer funds — then safely store the new seed. If both are lost, the funds cannot be recovered.
Security alert: If a website, popup, or person requests your recovery seed, stop immediately. That is a scam. Your recovery seed is the single key to your funds.
Best practices
- Store the recovery seed offline in multiple secure places (e.g., a safe, bank deposit box, or secure geographic split storage).
- Keep your device firmware up to date, but only through the official companion app.
- Use a passphrase (if you understand how it works) for extra security — note that a passphrase is effectively a separate additional word and must be stored/remembered carefully.
- Enable device lock and a strong PIN. Consider using a long, memorable passphrase in addition to the PIN.
FAQs
- Q: Can I recover my wallet on another Trézor or compatible wallet?
- A: Yes — if you have your recovery seed, you can recover on another compatible device that supports the same recovery standard. Be mindful of passphrases.
- Q: What if my device is lost or stolen?
- A: If someone obtains the device but not your recovery seed or passphrase, your funds remain safe. If they also have your seed, transfer funds immediately from a secure wallet.
- Q: Is it safe to use a phone to set up?
- A: Many companion apps support mobile setup. For maximum security, prefer a clean, fully updated computer and avoid public or untrusted networks during setup.
